Review: The Jewel

The Jewel
Author:
Publication Date: September 4th 2014
Publisher: Walker Books Ltd.
~A copy was provided by the publisher in exchange for an honest review~

A shocking and compelling new YA series from debut author, Amy Ewing; The Handmaid's Tale meets The Other Boleyn Girl in a world where beauty and brutality collide.

Violet Lasting is no longer a human being. Tomorrow she becomes Lot 197, auctioned to the highest royal bidder in the Jewel of the Lone City. Tomorrow she becomes the Surrogate of the House of the Lake, her sole purpose to produce a healthy heir for the Duchess. Imprisoned in the opulent cage of the palace, Violet learns the brutal ways of the Jewel, where the royal women compete to secure their bloodline and the surrogates are treated as disposable commodities.

Destined to carry the child of a woman she despises, Violet enters a living death of captivity – until she sets eyes on Ash Lockwood, the royal Companion. Compelled towards each other by a reckless, clandestine passion, Violet and Ash dance like puppets in a deadly game of court politics, until they become each other’s jeopardy – and salvation.

I don't know what I was expecting with The Jewel, but it wasn't this. In a good way this time. It was a lot darker and twisted than what you'd think- especially with the gorgeous cover. In that aspect, I read Only Ever Yours by not that long ago, and The Jewel reminded me a lot of it- not in character or storyline- but the message behind the book. The way women (in this case, the Surrogates) are viewed and valued and used and treated in a world that has less morality than ours right now. It's deep rooted in power among the rich and Royal bloodlines.

Beneath the streets of New York City live the Avicen, an ancient race of people with feathers for hair and magic running through their veins. Age-old enchantments keep them hidden from humans. All but one. Echo is a runaway pickpocket who survives by selling stolen treasures on the black market, and the Avicen are the only family she's ever known.

Echo is clever and daring, and at times she can be brash, but above all else she's fiercely loyal. So when a centuries-old war crests on the borders of her home, she decides it's time to act.

Legend has it that there is a way to end the conflict once and for all: find the Firebird, a mythical entity believed to possess power the likes of which the world has never seen. It will be no easy task, but if life as a thief has taught Echo anything, it's how to hunt down what she wants . . . and how to take it.

But some jobs aren't as straightforward as they seem. And this one might just set the world on fire

I *cough* much prefer the UK cover, because you know, it hasn't got the feel of The Nightmare Affair.

What're you waiting on?

Review: Of Monsters and Madness

Of Monsters and Madness
Author:
Publication Date: September 9th 2014
Publisher: EgmontUSA
~A copy was provided by the publisher in exchange for an honest review~

A romantic, historical retelling of classic Gothic horror featuring Edgar Allan Poe and his character Annabel Lee, from a New York Times best-selling author.Summoned to her father's home in 1820's Philadelphia, a girl finds herself in the midst of a rash of gruesome murders in which he might be implicated. She is torn romantically between her father's assistants-one kind and proper, one mysterious and brooding-who share a dark secret and may have more to do with the violent events than they're letting on.

I'm not going to pretend I know anything about the poem of Annabel Lee. I know it, of course, but I've never studied it, and although I do like poetry, it's not exactly my favourite thing in the world. I've seen Mary Lindsey's Ashes on Waves that made me want to read it, so when I saw Of Monsters and Madness I couldn't resist (I mean, have you read that title? Of. Monsters. and. Madness. It practically screams read me!) Besides, In the land of Gods and Monsters...I had Lana Del Rey's Gods & Monsters in my head the whole time (don't ask why, my brain doesn't know. And we're not talking about my love for Lana Del Rey, we're talking about the book, right? No more music talk.)

Review: Day 21 (The 100 #2)

Day 21 (The 100 #2)
Author:
Publication Date: 25th September 2014
Publisher: Hodder
~A copy was provided by the publisher in exchange for an honest review~

In this pulse-pounding sequel to Kass Morgan's The 100, secrets are revealed, beliefs are challenged, and relationships are tested. And the hundred will struggle to survive the only way they can - together.

Now a major TV series on E4. In this pulse-pounding sequel to Kass Morgan's The 100, secrets are revealed, beliefs are challenged, and relationships are tested. And the hundred will struggle to survive the only way they can - together.

It's been 21 days since The 100 landed on Earth. They're the only humans to set foot on the planet in centuries... or so they thought. Facing an unknown enemy, Wells attempts to keep the group together. Clarke strikes out for Mount Weather, in search of other Colonists, while Bellamy is determined to rescue his sister, no matter the cost. And back on the ship, Glass faces an unthinkable choice between the love of her life and life itself

No spoilers for Day 21, but maybe slight spoilers for The 100.

I enjoyed The 100, it was a fun, simple, easy mindless read that I needed, I liked the characters, the plot and world-building was a little wish-washy. However, what I hoped would happen in the next with the plot development, didn't come through in Day 21.

Review: Altered

Altered
Author:
Publication Date: January 1st 2013
Publisher: Little, Brown Books for Young Readers

When you can’t trust yourself, who can you believe?

Everything about Anna’s life is a secret. Her father works for the Branch at the helm of its latest project: monitoring and administering treatments to the four genetically altered boys in the lab below their farmhouse. There’s Nick, Cas, Trev . . . and Sam, who’s stolen Anna’s heart. When the Branch decides it’s time to take the boys, Sam stages an escape, killing the agents sent to retrieve them.

Anna is torn between following Sam or staying behind in the safety of her everyday life. But her father pushes her to flee, making Sam promise to keep her away from the Branch, at all costs. There’s just one problem. Sam and the boys don’t remember anything before living in the lab—not even their true identities.

Now on the run, Anna soon discovers that she and Sam are connected in more ways than either of them expected. And if they’re both going to survive, they must piece together the clues of their past before the Branch catches up to them and steals it all away.

Altered, you were perfect in every way, my friend. Let's check the criteria, shall we?

·         4 hot guys in your basement? Check.

·         Well rounded characters that suck you in but hold their mysteriousness? Check.

·         Mystery? Check.

·         Badass fight scenes? Check.

·         Secrets? Check.

·         Betrayal? Check.

·         On the run? Check.

·         Danger?

·         Romance? Check.

·         Insta-Romance? Negative. (Though, you could argue that it is, but, there's 1) it's set after years of her finding the boys in the basement, so the romance with Sam, is not insta- and then there's that other reason.

·         Love triangle? Halle-freaking-ujah. Negative.

7 Deadly Sins Tag

Thanks to the lovely Courtney @ Abibliophobic Tendencies for tagging me!

1) Greed

What is your most inexpensive book?

This one's hard, I've had a few good deals lately, and I do get some from friends/family, but I'm going with my favourite inexpensive one, which is my Collector's Edition of The Hunger Games (I actually had an Amazon voucher off Amber for Christmas and used it for that- so technically, Amber bought it.)

2) Wrath

What author do you have a love/hate relationship with?

JULIE KAGAWA, and when it comes to the Blood of Eden series, I'm sure you'll agree The Eternity Cure was mean, Kagawa, MEAN.  I love the series, I love how it concluded, but still. I've not gotten over that.

To save the lives of countless people in Captive’s Sound, Nadia has sworn herself to the One Beneath, to black magic. Her plan, and the town’s only hope, is for Nadia to learn enough sorcery to strike back against the forces of darkness. But now that she’s separated from her friends, her family, and her Steadfast, Mateo, Nadia is more vulnerable than ever to darkness. And as the sorceress Elizabeth summons torrential rains and brings the One Beneath closer to the mortal world, Nadia is running out of time to stop her. The final battle lines are drawn, surprising alliances are made, and true love is tested in the action-packed conclusion to the breathtaking Spellcaster series.

Sorceress is richly woven with New York Times bestselling author Claudia Gray’s signature dark magic, captivating mystery, and star-crossed romance.

I really enjoyed Spellcaster, like most of Claudia Grays', haven't read Steadfast yet though, since I was waiting on the final one being out before getting it.

What're you waiting on? :)

Teaser Tuesday (#37)

Teaser Tuesday is a weekly bookish meme hosted by MizB of Should Be Reading

Author:
Publication Date: September 25th 2014
Publisher:  Simon & Schuster UK Children's
From international bestselling author, Scott Westerfeld, comes Afterworlds, a brand new, thought-provoking, suspenseful thriller you won't be able to put down!

Darcy Patel has put college and everything else on hold to publish her teen novel, Afterworlds. Arriving in New York with no apartment or friends she wonders whether she's made the right decision until she falls in with a crowd of other seasoned and fledgling writers who take her under their wings…

Told in alternating chapters is Darcy's novel, a suspenseful thriller about Lizzie, a teen who slips into the 'Afterworld' to survive a terrorist attack.

But the Afterworld is a place between the living and the dead and as Lizzie drifts between our world and that of the Afterworld, she discovers that many unsolved - and terrifying - stories need to be reconciled. And when a new threat resurfaces, Lizzie learns her special gifts may not be enough to protect those she loves and cares about most

Only a handful of challenges remained- high school graduation, a perilous decision, and parental approval- before Darcy Patel would be packing her bags for New York City.

Mom had just texted me: Tell me she's older than the last one. And not a Libra again!

Didn't ask her bitch day.

Um, what?

BIRTHDAY. Autocorrect fail.
                                                     -Page 5 in ARC

I'm only 240 pages into Afterworlds so far and not sure what to think about it really, but I have another 400 pages to go. I am preferring Darcy's side of things, and a kind of look behind the scenes of publishing, though.

What're you reading? :)

Review: The Hit (AKA, I Am the Weapon. Previously, Boy Nobody. Previously, I Give Up on The Title.)

The Hit
Author:
Publication Date: 4th September 2014
Publisher: Orchard Books

The explosive new thriller for fans of Jason Bourne, Robert Muchamore and Michael Grant.
Boy Nobody is the perennial new kid in school, the one few notice and nobody thinks much about. He shows up in a new high school, in a new town, under a new name, makes few friends and doesn't stay long. Just long enough for someone in his new friend's family to die -- of "natural causes." Mission accomplished, Boy Nobody disappears, and moves on to the next target.
When Boy Nobody was just eleven, he discovered his own parents had died of not-so-natural causes. He soon found himself under the control of The Program, a shadowy government organization that uses brainwashed kids as counter-espionage operatives. But somewhere, deep inside Boy Nobody, is somebody: the boy he once was, the boy who wants normal things (like a real home, his parents back), a boy who wants out.
And he just might want those things badly enough to sabotage The Program's next mission.

I'm going to start by saying WHY THE HELL DIDN'T I READ THIS SOONER?! Thanks for putting The Mission in the mail, Hachette. I probably wouldn't have read it otherwise, and damn, I would've been missing out.
The Hit (Boy Nobody) is both a shocking and slightly disturbing story that could or could not actually be real. You sometimes hear about it, it's something conspiracists  see and fear,  it's something that happens in a fight for War. Parents die, children get recruited. It's serious business and it's handled well and efficiently. I haven't read a book that's kept my focus like that, one that I couldn't just put down, for a while. I wasn't expecting it in the slightest.

Stacking the Shelves (#57) & Recap: The Random Edition.

STSmallStacking the Shelves is hosted by Tynga's Reviews.

So, how was everybody's week? Mines basically sucked. Beginning of next weeks going to suck too, as soon as Monday & Tuesday's gone, hopefully it'll turn around.

In other news, I'm addicted to Chicago Fire, and I'm shipping already. I 'm a shipper whore, but we're all shipper whores here, right?

But, books! The Random Edition because well, the books are all random. Some part of a series. Series I haven't started.

I've also been meaning to do this stack for the past 3 weeks, I got there eventually?..

Review: Feral

Title: Feral
Author:
Release date:  August 26th 2014
Publisher: HarperTeen
The Lovely Bones meets Black Swan in this haunting psychological thriller with twists and turns that will make you question everything you think you know.
It’s too late for you. You’re dead. Those words continue to haunt Claire Cain months after she barely survived a brutal beating in Chicago. So when her father is offered a job in another state, Claire is hopeful that getting out will offer her a way to start anew.

But when she arrives in Peculiar, Missouri, Claire feels an overwhelming sense of danger, and her fears are confirmed when she discovers the body of a popular high school student in the icy woods behind the school, surrounded by the town’s feral cats. While everyone is quick to say it was an accident, Claire knows there’s more to it, and vows to learn the truth about what happened.
But the closer she gets to uncovering the mystery, the closer she also gets to realizing a frightening reality about herself and the damage she truly sustained in that Chicago alley….

Holly Schindler’s gripping story is filled with heart-stopping twists and turns that will keep readers guessing until the very last page

Oh Feral, what am I going to do with you? On one hand you were crazy and weird and pretty much what I love about these types of books. But then on the other hand, it was not at all where I wanted or thought it would go. Not that that's necessarily a bad thing it just really had this big build up that kept you guessing what was going on that by the time it was revealed it deflated.

Edible Books: Harry Potter Edition

Edible Books is exactly as it says on the tin, edible books. No, really. Edible Books will be recipes inspired by food mentioned in books, with taste testing's of course (sorry, not by you, by us.) ;)

Hello again lovelies! It's Thursday, so it's Amber- and I'm back. The past fortnight we had a double edition of Cosplay Antics, so today is the first ever Edible Books post. Kirsty and I have started some layout planning for the next couple of months, for themes. We're playing safe for the first post, with a series that is a big part of ours- and everyone's childhood/life. It is in the title, so you should know what I'm talking about...Harry Potter of course! Recently, I have been re-reading the Harry Potter series, and last weekend I went to the Warner Brothers Harry Potter Studio Tour in London- Kirsty went back when it first opened up, so we've both been there now. That was the inspiration for this post, and to create and back some yummy noms. And let's be honest, who doesn't like Harry Potter?  You're crazy if you don't.

As I said before that little side-track, I've felt inspired, so while I was at the tour I was able to buy my very own Chocolate Frog, and while I did want to keep it, I ate it, because who wouldn't? Kirsty still has hers, she's an alien.  Since I ate it, I just had to put my own spin on it and see what I could do with it.

So, I present, my Chocolate Frogs.
This is the box the HP Tour keeps the Chocolate Frogs (and card in,) and of course I'm going to keep it to use as a prop for different things, which came in handy today with making the frogs. :)

Teaser Tuesday (#36)

Title: Anatomy of a Misfit
Author:
Publication Date: September 2nd 2014
Publisher: Harper Children’s
This emotional, hilarious, devastating, and ultimately triumphant YA debut, based on actual events, recounts one girl’s rejection of her high school’s hierarchy—and her discovery of her true self in the face of tragedy.

Fall’s buzzed-about, in-house favorite. Outside, Anika Dragomir is all lip gloss and blond hair—the third most popular girl in school. Inside, she’s a freak: a mix of dark thoughts, diabolical plots, and, if local chatter is to be believed, vampire DNA (after all, her father is Romanian). But she keeps it under wraps to maintain her social position. One step out of line and Becky Vilhauer, first most popular girl in school, will make her life hell. So when former loner Logan McDonough shows up one September hotter, smarter, and more mysterious than ever, Anika knows she can’t get involved. It would be insane to throw away her social safety for a nerd. So what if that nerd is now a black-leather-jacket-wearing dreamboat, and his loner status is clearly the result of his troubled home life? Who cares if the right girl could help him with all that, maybe even save him from it? Who needs him when Jared Kline, the bad boy every girl dreams of, is asking her on dates? Who?

Anatomy of a Misfit is Mean Girls meets The Perks of Being a Wallflower, and Anika’s hilariously deadpan delivery will appeal to readers for its honesty and depth. The so-sad-it’s-funny high school setting will pull readers in, but when the story’s dark foreboding gradually takes over, the devastating penultimate tragedy hits like a punch to the gut. Readers will ride the highs and lows alongside funny, flawed Anika—from laughter to tears, and everything in between.

"Seriously? Shouldn't we call someone?"

"Yeah, we should call that hot new debate teacher and ask him if he's heard that song by the Police about the 'young teacher, he's subject, to schoolgirl fantasy..."

"You're crazy."

"Crazy for that debate teacher."
-8% in Kindle

Chip Rider is the second potato on the popular guy front. He's blond and blue-eyed and looks like a Ken dolls had a baby with a Cabbage Patch Kid.
-16% in Kindle

This was so hard to choose today, I'm 28% in and have so many highlights, it's a pretty hit or miss story and the way it's written, and I don't know which side I'm on yet, so we'll see.

What're you reading? :)

Review: Amity (Just Say No)

Amity
Author:
Publication Date: August 26th 2014
Publisher: EgmontUSA
~A copy was provided by the publisher in exchange for an honest review~
For fans of Stephen King and American Horror Story, a gruesome thriller suggested by the events of the Amityville Horror.

Connor's family moves to Amity to escape shady business deals. Ten years later, Gwen's family moves to Amity for a fresh start after she's recovered from a psychotic break.

But something is not right about this secluded house. Connor's nights are plagued with gore-filled dreams of demons and destruction. Dreams he kind of likes. Gwen has lurid visions of corpses that aren't there and bleeding blisters that disappear in the blink of an eye. She knows Amity is evil and she must get her family out, but who would ever believe her?

Amity isn't just a house. She is a living force, bent on manipulating her inhabitants to her twisted will. She will use Connor and Gwen to bring about a bloody end as she's done before. As she'll do again.

Alternating between parallel narratives, Amity is a tense and terrifying tale suggested by true-crime events that will satisfy even the most demanding horror fan.

So, I'm keeping this short because 1) there's not much to say about it and 2) it's hard to even know what to say because not much actually went on.

If anyone asked describe Amity in one word it would be disturbing. Because if I said this was disappointing, my house might kill me. Firstly, let's talk about the false marketing shall we? It sounds like an Amityville Horror retelling, looks like an Amityville Horror retelling, the house is described like Amityville and It's even called Amity, so guess what it is?

Review: Dangerous Boys (OH.MY.GOD)

Dangerous Boys
Author:
Publication Date: August 14th 2014
Publisher: Simon & Schuster UK
~A copy was provided by the publisher in exchange for an honest review~

Three teens venture into the abandoned Monroe estate one night; hours later, only two emerge from the burning wreckage. Chloe drags one Reznick brother to safety, unconscious and bleeding; the other is left to burn, dead in the fire. But which brother survives? And is his death a tragic accident? Desperate self-defense? Or murder?
Chloe is the only one with the answers. As the fire rages, and police and parents demand the truth, she struggles to piece together the story of how they got there-a story of jealousy, twisted passion, and the darkness that lurks behind even the most beautiful of faces

Dangerous Girls was on my radar last year, and although it had all these amazing reviews I didn't think it was for me. When I saw Dangerous Boys and thought why not? Why not indeed, because oh damn. I just- NO WORDS. So this will probably be a rambling review because it's one of those that are hard to talk about without spoiling, but is so freaking mind blowing that I just want to spoil it. But, I won't. Because you seriously need to read it for yourself and get all the feelings because it is amazing and twisted with a heavy dose of psychology and is it bad to say how much I freaking love how twisted it was? It has some serious shit going on, and something like this you shouldn't really love but I did, because it was fascinating and  see? Rambling.
