Some things are best left buried. Gabe is feeling the pressure. His family has money troubles, he's hardly talking to his dad, plus lowlife Benny is on his case. Needing some space to think, he heads off into the hills surrounding LA. And he suddenly stumbles across a secret that will change everything. A shallow grave. Gabe doesn't think twice about taking the gold bracelet he finds buried there. Even from the clutches of skeletal hands. But he has no idea what he's awakening...A chilling new story in the Red Eye series

I've been loving the Red Eye series so far, though my favourites have been Frozen Charlotte and Flesh and Blood, Bad Bones is still a good addition to it. I did, however, have a few issues with it, but I'll start with the good.

  • ·         Bad Bones seemed very character driven more than plot driven, and I do love character driven stories.

  • ·         I've never read anything like it.

  • ·         It has a good mix of characters, including a drug dealer.

  • ·         It brings up questions of Heaven and Hell.

  • ·         It felt like a mix between Indiana Jones and The Mummy

My issues with Bad Bones was mainly it was slow to start, so slow at times where it took me a while to actually get through a chapter or two, it does pick up half way through it, but overall, Bad Bones doesn't have a fast paced plot. Another issues is although Bad Bones is character driven, I couldn't connect to Gabe at all. Maybe because I've never been put in the same situation, the horror aspects aside, with the family dynamics, so I didn't find him relatable, that's not to say somebody else wouldn't, obviously.

The family wasn't that present in the story, though we do see more of Gabe's little sister than his parents, but in a way, it did work with the story considering how Gabe got away with things in the first place, especially when he finds the bones and at first, the one gold bracelet, and later on when he decides to go back and see if there are any more there for him to sell because he needed the money, and how he hid it in his room.

Overall, I think I'm in the middle with Bad Bones, there were some aspects of it that I liked, but for all the things I did like, were countered with issues I didn't like.

  1. I expected the main character to be a good way into this story - reading the extract you posted and the synopsis - so I'm surprised he wasn't. I like the idea of a Mummy/Indiana Jones inspired story though

    1. I just couldn't connect to him, and when I can't connect to a character, I don't really connect to the story either, it was interesting though!
