Sixteen-year-old Avery Roe wants only to take her rightful place as the sea witch of Prince Island, making the charms that keep the island's whalers safe and prosperous at sea. But before she could learn how to control her power, her mother - the first Roe woman in centuries to turn her back on magic - steals Avery away from her grandmother. Avery must escape before her grandmother dies, taking with her the secrets of the Roe's power.

The one magical remnant left to Avery is the ability to read dreams, and one night she foresees her own murder. Time is running short, both for her and for the people of her island who need the witches' help to thrive.

Avery has never read a dream that hasn't come true, but a tattooed harpoon boy named Tane tells her he can help her change her fate. Becoming a witch may prevent her murder and save her island from ruin, but Avery discovers it will also require a sacrifice she never expected. And as she falls in love with Tane, she learns it is his life and hers that hang in the balance.

A sweeping romance with a spellbinding twist - from a talented new voice in YA fiction

I hope, also, that they remember none of it would have happened had my mother not turned her back on magic. Or had my mother left me alone in my grandmother's cottage. Or had my mother, drunk on the cult of domesticity and stuffed to the bring with 1860's mortality, not been so determined to see me a proper lady.

So, if the people of my island blame anyone, better her than me.

It was a slow start from me, but such beautiful writing, but it picked up and it's pretty amazing, by the time this is posted I've probably finished it, and it's one of those that you don't want to carry on reading because it means it'll end. :(

What're you reading? :)

I'm still not sure about this one as I've heard mixed things but those quotes are interesting. Maybe I'll check it out from the library :)

Yeah, I can see it's one you'll either love or hate because it's a slow going one, and a little strange, but definitely check it out from the library and see. :)
Haven't heard of this book before... sounds very interesting! Here's my teaser: http://www.owlcatmountain.com/2014/08/05/tuesday-...

I'm so used to seeing the purple cover, I didn't recognise the book immediately! Great teasers, Kirsty-Marie. I'm on the fence right now, I've seen both good and bad about it. Sounds like you loved it (hope you did!), can't wait to read your review!

I didn't when I first saw it, I thought it sounded familiar but had to check, haha. That's the thing with US/UK covers, and the title changes. Title changes are more confusing for me (even though, this does still have Salt & Storm) but The Vanishing Season was changed to The Moment Collector, I thought Jodi Lynn Anderson had two new ones out...
I'm excited for this one! It's on my August TBR, so I should be getting to it soon. I'm glad to hear it picked up for you. :)
