Booking Through Thursday: Pointed

Booking Through Thursday is a weekly meme, hosted by btt2, about (mostly) books and reading.

Which is better (or preferred) … stories with multiple character points of view? Or stories that stick to just one or two at most? And, why?

Before, I would have said I'm strictly a one point of view person, I don't even know why. I just used to hate reading more than one.

Now I really do enjoy two, I guess it depends on the story and whether it merits two point of views, since there's two sides to every story and all that.

I'm still sketchy with more than two, especially if they're both male/female, and are not fleshed out enough for you to dictate which the voice belongs to. Because then I have to keep checking and that distracts me and ruins the story.

What do you think?

It is particularly frustrating when there are multiple points of view that end up sounding the same. I think if you're gonna write for more than one character you have to makes sure they're really distinctive or it's just confusing for the reader.
I agree--if it's going to work, then each character needs to have a distinct voice! If not, it's just the author trying a new gimmick and that's not an effective way of moving the narrative forward--it just becomes a roadblock for the reader.
I know what you mean about having to check who is talking in books with both narrators being the same gender. I can't remember what I was reading (I have a really bad memory) but something i read recently had two female narrators, and I did have to keep looking at who I was reading the chapter of.

I've written up a post about my thoughts on this question, if you want to take a look. http://the-book-tower.blogspot.co.uk/2013/10/book...
