Untold by  Expected publication: August 29th 2013 by Simon & Schuster UK

Free from bonds, but not each other

It’s time to choose sides… On the surface, Sorry-in-the-Vale is a sleepy English town. But Kami Glass knows the truth. Sorry-in-the-Vale is full of magic. In the old days, the Lynburn family ruled with fear, terrifying the people into submission in order to kill for blood and power. Now the Lynburns are back, and Rob Lynburn is gathering sorcerers so that the town can return to the old ways.

But Rob and his followers aren’t the only sorcerers in town. A decision must be made: pay the blood sacrifice, or fight. For Kami, this means more than just choosing between good and evil. With her link to Jared Lynburn severed, she’s now free to love anyone she chooses. But who should that be?

I loved Unspoken, can't wait for this one. For real.

Author:
Release date: September 3rd 2013
Publisher: (Strange Chemistry) Angry Robot
Page: 130

Five years ago, the gods of ancient mythology awoke around the world.
This morning, Kyra Locke is late for school.
Seventeen-year-old Kyra lives in a transformed Washington, D.C., home to the embassies of divine pantheons and the mysterious Society of the Sun. But when rebellious Kyra encounters two trickster gods on her way back from school, one offering a threat and the other a warning, it turns out her life isn’t what it seems. She escapes with the aid of Osborne “Oz” Spencer, an intriguing Society field operative, only to discover that her scholar father has disappeared with a dangerous relic. The Society needs it, and they don’t care that she knows nothing about her father’s secrets.
Now Kyra must depend on her wits and the suspect help of scary gods, her estranged oracle mother, and, of course, Oz–whose first allegiance is to the Society. She has no choice if she’s going to recover the missing relic and save her father. And if she doesn’t? Well, that may just mean the end of the world as she knows it.

“Let’s do it,” Justin says. “I can revisit the text on the Apkallu you have.”
“Seven sages put something in your head?” Oz asks, and begins to walk. To me, he explains, “That’s another name for them.”
“I’ll never catch up to all the stuff you guys know.” Good thing I won’t have to.

Will Josh ever understand her secret?

Review

This will be a short review, as I neither enjoyed or hated Dark Spell, it was just...there.
Fifteen year old Callie thinks her life is boring. She isn't popular, and she really doesn't have any friends, (well, not in her town) her only solace being Josh, whose from Edinburgh and keeps in contact via facebook. Me, being in Wales , knows this method very well as I have a really good friend in Canada.

Em is locked in a bare, cold cell with no comforts. Finn is in the cell next door. The Doctor is keeping them there until they tell him what he wants to know. Trouble is, what he wants to know hasn't happened yet.

Em and Finn have a shared past, but no future unless they can find a way out. The present is torture - being kept apart, overhearing each other's anguish as the Doctor relentlessly seeks answers. There's no way back from here, to what they used to be, the world they used to know. Then Em finds a note in her cell which changes everything. It's from her future self and contains some simple but very clear instructions. Em must travel back in time to avert a tragedy that's about to unfold. Worse, she has to pursue and kill the boy she loves to change the future.

-Spoilers ahead!-

Oh. I can't take it, you guys! You know when you've read something so good you wish you hadn't read it so you could re-read anew?
I've only had a few books out of my two decades of life, one of the main ones being Heart-Shaped Bruise by Tanya Byrne, and Ultraviolet by R.J. Anderson.
I'm not going to go into the whole Doctor Who thing, because I live in Cardiff and I'd be shunned and my best friend would kill me.
I don't know whether to laugh or cry, really, because finally, a book with such a beautiful cover, and, dude time travel, lived up to what I thought it would be.

Playlist Thursday

Music has always been apart of my life, and like others, especially when writing. Certain songs have gotten me through certain parts of my life that could have ended a lot different than it did.

I usually don't listen to music while reading, but recently I've started compiling playlists for books before reading just by the summary and feel, to see if what I've picked works with the one I'm reading, which I recently did with Branded by , , (you can find that playlist and review here.)

Now, while reading All Our Yesterdays  (which, I'll be posting my review tomorrow!), as soon as I got sucked into that heart-breaking world, I knew I had to finish it before even thinking of applying music to it. I've gone through tons and I mean  tons of songs and finally compiled a playlist!

Since my review isn't due until tomorrow I thought I'd preview my playlist instead. Since I can literally talk your head off about music (seriously I so could), and can compile a playlist the size of my iPod, I've done a Top Ten. I've also decided to do this every Thursday.

(Click on the song titles to listen!)

  1. Irrelevant- Lauren Aquilina
  2. Currents- Dashboard Confessional
  3. The Whole World Is Falling Apart, & The Salvation of One - Enation (Technically, this is 2, but shhh.)

Fifty years ago the Commander came into power and murdered all who opposed him. In his warped mind, the seven deadly sins were the downfall of society. He created the Hole where sinners are branded according to their sins and might survive a few years. At best.
Now LUST wraps around my neck like blue fingers strangling me. I’ve been accused of a crime I didn’t commit and now the Hole is my new home.

Darkness. Death. Violence. Pain.

Now every day is a fight for survival. But I won’t die. I won’t let them win.

The Hole can’t keep me. The Hole can’t break me.
I am more than my brand. I’m a fighter.
My name is Lexi Hamilton, and this is my story.

Oh My Eff-
Alright, I  finished Branded and adsjnoawefnowianfoinweosfhwaoifn my brains a little scrambled.

I read it in one sitting and oh so many emotions, I feel like I need retail therapy. I'm also re-watching Roswell for the millionth time, so I'm in a LETS HUG mood.
Everyone is a sinner, take me, I bought Branded over a week ago. I've been lusting over the damn cover until I had a free choice read day- no obligation to review. I'm reviewing anyway. Damn you Abi & Missy, I wanted a quick light read, not to be sucked into a world full of desperation, depression and hope, with characters of depth and a deathly romance that kills.
I also have a gluttony for books. Oh, and then there's pesky wrath- I like to throw books across the room if they make me angry) *note, no books were injured during the process of this review*

Review: INK, DNF'D

INK
Author: Amanda Sun
Publication Date: July 5th, 2013
Source : Received a digital copy via Mira Ink, Harlequin (UK) Limited and Netgalley. (In exchange for an honest review. Thank you!)

Ink is in their blood

On the heels of a family tragedy, Katie Greene must move halfway across the world. Stuck with her aunt in Shizuoka, Japan, Katie feels lost. Alone. She doesn’t know the language, she can barely hold a pair of chopsticks, and she can’t seem to get the hang of taking her shoes off whenever she enters a building.

When Katie meets aloof but gorgeous Tomohiro, the star of the school’s kendo team, she is intrigued by him... and a little scared. His tough attitude seems meant to keep her at a distance, and when they’re near each other, strange things happen. Pens explode. Ink drips from nowhere. And unless Katie is seeing things, drawings
come to life.

Somehow Tomo is connected to the kami, powerful ancient beings who once ruled Japan—and as feelings develop between Katie and Tomo, things begin to spiral out of control. The wrong people are starting to ask questions, and if they discover the truth, no one will be safe.

Ugh!
I was so so looking forward to this one with such an interesting prose, and it could have been so great.
If it wasn't for the characters.
I have to say, I gave up half way through because I couldn't stand them any longer.

When the World was Flat (And we were in love)
Author: Ingrid Jonach
Publication Date: September 3rd 2013
Source : Received a digital ARC via Angry Robot/Strange Chemistry and Netgalley. (In exchange for an honest review. Thank you!)

Looking back, I wonder if I had an inkling that my life was about to go from ordinary to extraordinary.

When sixteen-year-old Lillie Hart meets the gorgeous and mysterious Tom Windsor-Smith for the first time, it's like fireworks - for her, anyway. Tom looks as if he would be more interested in watching paint dry; as if he is bored by her and by her small Nebraskan town in general.
But as Lillie begins to break down the walls of his seemingly impenetrable exterior, she starts to suspect that he holds the answers to her reoccurring nightmares and to the impossible memories which keep bubbling to the surface of her mind - memories of the two of them, together and in love.
When she at last learns the truth about their connection, Lillie discovers that Tom has been hiding an earth-shattering secret; a secret that is bigger - and much more terrifying and beautiful - than the both of them. She also discovers that once you finally understand that the world is round, there is no way to make it flat again.

Waiting on Wednesday (#2) Unhinged.

Waiting on" Wednesday is a weekly event hosted by Breaking the Spine that spotlights upcoming releases.

This doesn't really need an introduction.

Unhinged by A.G. Howard Expected publication: January 7th 2014 by Amulet Books

Alyssa Gardner has been down the rabbit hole and faced the bandersnatch. She saved the life of Jeb, the guy she loves, and escaped the machinations of the disturbingly seductive Morpheus and the vindictive Queen Red. Now all she has to do is graduate high school and make it through prom so she can attend the prestigious art school in London she's always dreamed of.
That would be easier without her mother, freshly released from an asylum, acting overly protective and suspicious. And it would be much simpler if the mysterious Morpheus didn’t show up for school one day to tempt her with another dangerous quest in the dark, challenging Wonderland—where she (partly) belongs.

As prom and graduation creep closer, Alyssa juggles Morpheus’s unsettling presence in her real world with trying to tell Jeb the truth about a past he’s forgotten. Glimpses of Wonderland start to bleed through her art and into her world in very disturbing ways, and Morpheus warns that Queen Red won’t be far behind.

If Alyssa stays in the human realm, she could endanger Jeb, her parents, and everyone she loves. But if she steps through the rabbit hole again, she'll face a deadly battle that could cost more than just her head.

I am unbelievably excited for Unhinged, I mean, just look at that cover! Also, a good read for me is when I don't know which team I'm on.

Are you Team Jeb or Team Morpheus? :)

What's on yours?

The Weight Of Souls. Review.

The Weight of Souls
Author: Bryony Pearce
Publication Date: August 6th 2013
Source : Received a digital ARC via Angry Robot/Strange Chemistry and Netgalley. (In exchange for an honest review. Thank you!)

Sixteen year old Taylor Oh is cursed: if she is touched by the ghost of a murder victim then they pass a mark beneath her skin. She has three weeks to find their murderer and pass the mark to them – letting justice take place and sending them into the Darkness. And if she doesn’t make it in time? The Darkness will come for her…

She spends her life trying to avoid ghosts, make it through school where she’s bullied by popular Justin and his cronies, keep her one remaining friend, and persuade her father that this is real and that she’s not going crazy.

But then Justin is murdered and everything gets a whole lot worse. Justin doesn’t know who killed him, so there’s no obvious person for Taylor to go after. The clues she has lead her to the V Club, a vicious secret society at her school where no one is allowed to leave… and where Justin was dared to do the stunt which led to his death.

Can she find out who was responsible for his murder before the Darkness comes for her? Can she put aside her hatred for her former bully to truly help him?

And what happens if she starts to fall for him?

Review
Taylor Oh lives with a curse that plagues her bloodline, from her mother before her, which would follow through to her children, and theirs after, etc, etc, I think you get the point.
The curse, you ask? She's-the-kid-that-can-see-dead-people.

Yup, another one  in a long line of YA. The difference? This one was interesting in a different way. Yes, Taylor can see ghosts to help them move on, and yes, she doesn't like what she does, or that she has no choice. Once a murdered ghost touches her skin,  black mark brands her skin that once transferred calls a darkness that she can only guess is hell. The problem? If she doesn't find the murderer in an estimated few weeks and transfer the mark to the rightful murderer, the darkness will take her.
Then there's a father that doesn't believe her and thinks she has a disease and draws blood out of her like it's juice, and a friend that she regularly abandons, and is afraid she'll lose her if she pushes the boundaries, but Taylor won't tell her the truth.  Oh, then there's Pete, that once friend that ignores her and has joined the "Popular" gang that regularly verbally, and occasionally physically bully her. Let's just say, some phrases that come out of their mouths are pretty foul.  And racist.

Besides being pretty horrible human beings, the "popular" gang really are worse than they seem, something even more sinister and controlling than the darkness.
The main one who likes to make her life hell, Justin, the supposed "leader", who, let's be honest, isn't, falls to his death and marks Taylor.

Now,  the guy who regularly liked making fun of her race, and never stopped the others from bullying her, needs her help.
This is where I would be smug.

Like really smug.
Taylor takes it pretty well, unfortunately.

But, it's her job, and if she doesn't the darkness will come for her, so she has no choice to avenge his murder, only Justin doesn't know who his killer is, and he don't even believe he was murdered.
As the mark grows darker, the more she loses hope in finding his murderer plus she loses the one friend she did have there is only one choice.

If she can't beat them, join them.

Thoughts
I really liked the beginning, it hooked me in, and then the bullying started and I just wanted to slap them. It dragged a little and to be honest, I lost interest in it until it started picking up 3/4 and I was sucked in again.
It was interesting enough for me to keep reading, though I didn't get the romance element with Taylor and Justin, after everything he did to her, she can just forgive him? Really? That aside, I didn't feel the development that much to be connected to the characters.
I love Egyptian mythology and the enigma of Anubis, saying this, the diary entries didn't keep me entertained and felt a little information overload. Maybe my view was a little skewered since recently reading Spirit and Dust.

Anyway, the ending! Now that is keeping me in for the next one.

Rating: 3/5

How far would you go to fit in? Sorana Salem is ok with being not quite bottom of the pile at her exclusive private school. Until the mysterious Johansson twins arrive unexpectedly mid-term. Hypnotically beautiful and immensely cool, magnetic Elyse and mute Melanie aren’t like the school’s usual identikit mean girls. Soon Sorana’s sharing sleepovers and Saturday nights out with the twins. But their new world of Ouidja boards and older boys might not be as simple as it seems. And the dark secrets that they share could be about to take Sorana down a path that’s impossible to turn back from…

 Review:

-Warning- If you’re not highly strung and are susceptible to manipulation, welcome to this review.

Read this book.

There, I said it.
Though for the majority of it you might want to pull your hair out, it’s a slow burner, you’ll have a lot of questions that don’t necessarily get answered, and  I have to say at first I didn’t like it, but I didn’t hate it. It took me a while to get into it and by the time I did it was almost over. Though what an ending! I can honestly say, one I wasn’t really expecting either. There are some good twists, thoroughly twisted scenes, but it’s mysterious and raw, and Sorona was realistic and like so many others before her that do get sucked into the wrong crowd. I liked Sorona, though I may have wanted to shake her a few times to wake the heck up and smell the crazy, and to just be herself. I get she was easy to manipulate but seriously, she wasn’t all innocent as she tried to come across. She was a little mean to begin with and that just escalated when meeting Elyse, but it was there, and for someone to point out about the bitch “A” crowd, she was a bitch too. Okay, among a different scale, and at least she admitted she felt mean, she came across a little fake at times, especially with Nathalie, who is supposed to be her friend, and don’t even get me started on Shimmi.

Though I get it, it’s hard when you don’t have many friends or in the ‘it’ crowd, but please, being in my own school college that was sharing classes with another school, I knew nobody. That was fun. Admittedly, I dropped out after a month, but my small class was friendly, not everybody’s mean.
Anyway, enough about me.

Waiting On Wednesday, (#01)

"Waiting on" Wednesday is a weekly event hosted by Breaking the Spine that spotlights upcoming releases.

Antigoddess by Kendare Blake, Expected publication: September 10th 2013 by Tor Teen

The Goddess War begins in Antigoddess, the first installment of the new series by acclaimed author of Anna Dressed in Blood, Kendare Blake.
Old Gods never die…

Or so Athena thought. But then the feathers started sprouting beneath her skin, invading her lungs like a strange cancer, and Hermes showed up with a fever eating away his flesh. So much for living a quiet eternity in perpetual health.

Desperately seeking the cause of their slow, miserable deaths, Athena and Hermes travel the world, gathering allies and discovering enemies both new and old. Their search leads them to Cassandra—an ordinary girl who was once an extraordinary prophetess, protected and loved by a god.

These days, Cassandra doesn’t involve herself in the business of gods—in fact, she doesn’t even know they exist. But she could be the key in a war that is only just beginning.

Because Hera, the queen of the gods, has aligned herself with other of the ancient Olympians, who are killing off rivals in an attempt to prolong their own lives. But these anti-gods have become corrupted in their desperation to survive, horrific caricatures of their former glory. Athena will need every advantage she can get, because immortals don’t just flicker out.

Every one of them dies in their own way. Some choke on feathers. Others become monsters. All of them rage against their last breath.

The Goddess War is about to begin.

Penemuel (Pen) fell from grace over a millennium ago, yet there are still times she questions her decision to follow her twin brother, Azael, to Hell. Now that the archangel Michael has returned, threatening Lucifer’s vie for the throne, she begins questioning everything she has always believed.

As Hell prepares for war - spreading a demonic virus and pilfering innocent souls to build an army - the lines separating the worlds blur. Fates erase and the future is left unwritten. Azael is determined that he and his sister will continue to serve as demons together, but for the first time in her life, Pen is not ruled by destiny. She has the freedom of choice.

With choice comes sacrifice, and Pen must decide which side she’s willing to risk everything fighting for: the light, or the dark.

Review
Fallen from Heaven, Penemuel and her twin brother Azael followed in Lucifer’s steps, and plead to do his word. At first, Pen and Az were amongst highest demons, having a part in the taking down of Archangel Michael and corrupted the balance of Heaven and Hell, ending the raging war between them, for now.  Failing in their plan to corrupt the first man, Adam, Pen and Az were mocked, and slowly slid down in ranks, having to claw their way back up the Level 3 demons they are now...

Review will be posted tomorrow, for now, enjoy these quotes.

“So you don’t remember breaking my jaw then?”
I widen my eyes in surprise. “I what?”
“Or cracking my ribs and shattering my kneecap?” His voice is flat.

-Page 49.

“I know you don’t remember me, but I clearly remember you,” I begin.
“And I remember that day.”
He watched me attentively.
I close my eyes, evoking the memory. “Lucifer killed you,” I say, my voice tight.
 “My brother.” He says quietly.

Slowly, I open my eyes and look at him across the glowing jars. The bright blue of his eyes is now dark and reflective, reminding me of the warm pond below the cave. I nod my head again.
“Yes, your brother.”

It’s been twenty three days since Quinn has slept for more than minutes at a time. Demons have invaded her dreams, stalking her, and whispering of her death. The lack of sleep and crippling fear are ruining her life. Energy drinks and caffeine pills don’t make a dent. When Quinn dozes off in the school hallway, Aaron, an amnesiac with a psychic ability, accidentally enters her nightmare. The demons are determined to keep them apart, and Aaron from discovering the secret locked away in his memory. Together, they could banish the darkness back to the underworld for good. That is, unless the demons kill them first.

 Review:
Eighteen months ago, the day her father walked out and never came home, Quinn Taylor started having nightmares of dark entities reaching out for her. Thinking it was her subconscious giving her a way to deal with his absence she doesn’t think much of it. Until the nightmares get worse and worse, from harmless nightmares to dark, vivid and dangerous Quinn hasn’t had a full night’s sleep for twenty-three days. Trying everything she can to stay awake, blasting music that’s way past healthy for your eardrums, red bull, caffeine pills and even physically hurting herself to keep awake, but eventually she falls asleep, and the nightmares begin as soon as she closes her eyes, first the oncoming cold, tendrils of fog choking her and dragging her dream self tunnelling through the dark void until she smacks into the hard, cold ground of a forest floors where the darkness lay.
